TheiaCon talk: Using Theia in the cloud for Embedded C/C++ development

I delivered the the following talk at TheiaCon 2026. Here is the abstract:

Embedded C/C++ development has traditionally been done on local computers, requiring installing toolchains, drivers, and other build tools “just right” to get everything working and reproducible. In this talk I’ll share how Renesas has been using Eclipse Theia running in the cloud to provide an Embedded C/C++ development in the cloud requiring zero install beyond a browser. Renesas’ project, Renesas 365, will provide real world examples of the challenges faced.

Renesas 365 is built using Theia Cloud, Eclipse Cloud CDT, and running familiar AWS cloud infrastructure. This talk will be discuss the challenges and benefits of running on such machines as they have a performance characteristics and data persistence issues than IDEs on local computers.

This talk builds on my previous TheiaCon 2024 session about running GDB in the browser with WebAssembly, but goes further by discussing what this looks like in production, in a real cloud-based embedded development product. It is a practical look at how modern web-based developer tools can help make embedded software development more scalable, accessible, and developer-friendly.
